Her
electro-sonic melodies combined with catchy lyrics showcased the pop star's ability to create amazing pop songs. The album have garnered positive praise and was even selected as one of the best albums in last year's Cream of the Crop list.

The hard working songwriter is currently working on brand new music for she is on the verge for a breakout year. Recently I was able to talk to Teesa about her new music, her favorite albums and what's in store for her in 2012.

1. From listening to your music, your brand of pop music can be described as "futuristic power pop". Have you always wanted to be a pop star?

I just consider myself an artist. I write music and lyrics with my guitar or piano, then transform them later down the line. The last E.P. you heard of mine definitely dove into futuristic fantasy realms. I have a very nerdy side, as well as a heavy emotional side. But my focus is heavily on strong melodies and effortless feeling, unique lyrics. In the end, I guess I'm making Pop music!

2. A few years ago, you were in an indie rock band called Trey's Parade. What made you decide to go from indie rock to dance pop? Was the transition from genre to another difficult?

I think as a creative person, I'm always naturally evolving. But to be honest, I think it was L.A. that made this switch for me lol! I got introduced to the aspect of the music industry where people were hammering out tunes within hours and then got put on the radio the following weekend. It was a brilliant complex system that I felt really challenged by. I used to consider myself a music nerd, more experimental. But at the end of the day, I want my messages to be heard. And learning to write Pop music really helped that. My creative process is always focused on energy, rock and roll is energy. Whether it's from guitars or a synth beat.

3. What inspires you? Who are your influences?

Lately, I feel like a remote controlled car, where my emotions are the antenna. My moods inspire my music and fashion. Lately I've been influenced by the early 90's grunge wave as far as guitar tones and song structure, as well as electronic music from Japan and Korea.

4. Who are you currently listening? Any favorite albums?

Umm, I've recently been listening to a lot of Gotye, Fiona Apple, and K-Pop. My favorite group is SHINee. I've had Coldplay's "Paradise" on repeat since it came out for some reason.

5. What are your views on the constant evolution of the internet and it's impact on the landscape of music?

I mean, I've always pursued music independently mostly with tools from the internet. Everything is accessible to listeners, which is good for exposure, but not as much for longevity. I think it makes an artist have to work harder, continuously delivering for fans because they have shorter attention spans.

6. You are currently in the process of recording new music? What can we expect on the upcoming EP? Will there be a change in your sound?

Yes! I'm working on a new E.P. I am using a lot of different influences compared to the last release. I guess you could say it's a fusion of my Indie rock background flipped with the heavy dance side. I think Pop music needs a dose of heavy rawness. You can expect more guitars and punk messaging. I'm very excited with how the music is evolving!

7. Is there a possibility that any of your music will be pressed on vinyl one day?

Yeah, I hope so! That's when ya know you've made something right.

8. As an artist, what do you hope to achieve with your music?

I just want my music to make a difference to someone. Inspire, discover, or fuel their emotions.

9. Which artist would you be eager to work with in the future? What is your dream collaboration?

Prince! Yup, his name is Prince, and he is funky.

10. What are your plans for 2012? Will you be touring?

Yes! I actually have a few performances lined up this year. Mostly in major city dance clubs and a few concerts. So far I've been heavily supported by the LGBT and Asian American communities, but I'm hoping to expand to everywhere listeners are!

Teesa's Top 5 Influential Albums

Purple Rain by Prince
He is everything. Singer, musician, fashion icon, sex icon. This album taught me about the importance of a good riff.

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Undeniable. Michael has THE most expressive voice, and Quincy's arrangements are timeless.

Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt
Gwen's explosive raw energy and boldness built me up as a little girl.

Pinkerton by Weezer
An overlooked masterpiece of a Power Rock album!

Greatest Hits 1 by Queen
There's a lot of great Queen albums, but I played their Greatest Hits album like an addict. No one can write an anthem like Freddie can

My first exposure to Tyler, The Creator came about when I was looking through the pages of SPIN magazine. In the issue, it features the underground rapper in a gray hoodie and high crew socks jumping toward the crowd during an Odd Future concert. Intriqued by his aerodynamics and his crowd surfing antics, I decided to look further into the rapper. It turns out that Tyler, also known by his other alias Wolf Haley, is the ringleader behind the hip hop collective, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All or simply Odd Future.

Throughout 2011, they made headlines and received numerous praise for their groundbreaking and highly mutated brand of hip hop. They even earn the covenant spot on the cover of SPIN magazine under the title, "The Changing Faces of Hip Hop". Along with all this amounting amount of praise follows an equal amount of controversy. In the same year, Tyler released his second album, Goblin. It received positive remarks for its musical innovation and raw energy. However, due to the bizarre and graphic nature of the music, it was frowned upon by many people. Throughout the recording of Goblin, as well as his previous record Bastard, he avidly raps about his erratic sexual desires and the demons that haunt his inner head while swearing and saying incriminating words such as "faggot". There were even people who claim to believe that Tyler is an advocate for homophobia, violence and misogyny. But for those that read "The Changing Faces of Hip Hop" issue of SPIN will realize that although the content of his music can be a little horrifying, the reporter who wrote the article claim that Tyler is as charming and well-mannered as any young man.

With that in mind, I guess the question on people's minds is in regards to the nature of his music. Why all the violence? Is the mind of Tyler, The Creator possessed by some strange demon that causes him to say such things?

Well, first of, as far as content goes, I don't support any of the topics he raps about. In fact, I personally believe that Tyler himself does not even support or is an advocate of any one of them. I believe that people forget that it's art. It is Tyler's way of showing the audience the demons that haunt the mind of a man who is on the verge of insanity. It is a world that is violent and horrifying, but it's a world that he is able to showcase through his art. To tell you the truth, it is his boldness and innovation in music that is very compelling and worth noting.
As much as I love music, I'm not an avid watcher of the Grammy's. I would rather watch the highlights of the show the day after. Other than Adele having an extremely stellar performance, one of the major points of the night was Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl's acceptance speech when their single, "Walk" off their album Wasted Light won for Best Rock Performance. The acceptance speech can be read below. You can also watch it here.
First of, I want to congratulate the Foo Fighters for winning a Grammy for Wasted Light. In my opinion, it is one of the purest rock albums of 2011 and it was a well deserved win for the band. Also, I want to commend Dave Grohl for reminding us especially those who are in music the importance of "The Human Element". In his acceptance speech, he emphasizes that when it comes down to it, it's not about being perfect. It's about what the artist put in their music that will give it life. It's about what comes from the heart and soul of a musician. When he said that, I couldn't agree with him more. In a time, where fabrication is largely apparent in music, this serves as a kind reminder that are some artists like Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters that truly understand the art of making music.

Rock on, fellas. Rock on.
Whitney Houston is truly one of a kind. The moment she steps on stage, she can instantly captivate the hearts of everyone in her audience. Her voice is the kind of voice that is unequaled in every magnitude. It is memorable as it is timeless. Along with singing, she was also known for dabbling in acting. She was starred in a variety of films including The Preacher's Wife and Waiting To Exhale. However, her most memorable role will always Rachel Marron in her debut film, The Bodyguard. She continued to make music throughout her career and has made some of the most unforgettable songs of our generation including "I Will Always Love You", "Greatest Love of All", "Saving All My Love For You" and so many more. And despite her troubled marriage with Bobby Brown and her affliction with drugs later in her life, her fans continue to support her and praise her.
Unfortunately on this day, Whitney Houston has left us too soon before her time. We take this time to remember her not just for talents, but for the legacy that she has left in music. Her music continues to be a constant inspiration to countless of artists all over the world. And like her voice, it will continue to stand the test of time.
One of the biggest concert events in Hawaii of this year is none other than Audio Invasion. But before going into the details of the event, there are some news that was announced prior to the event. According to Bamp Project, Foster The People will be postponing their show this Wednesday. However, they will make it up to the fans of Hawaii by having their own live concert on March 18th. Despite the small setback, it was nice that the band was willing to play for us in the future (in the not too distant future to be exact).

Anyways, back to the event...

Although, Foster The People has postponed their act, three amazing acts Best Coast, Mariachi El Bronx and Cage The Elephant are still set to play this Wednesday night at the Aloha Tower Waterfront at 7pm. This is one of the biggest concert events of this year and is certainly not to be missed. For those that want to know of what's expected that night as well as though that would like to know more about the bands, here is a little preview.

Best Coast

The former child star (see the film, The Wizard), Bethany Cosentino began playing music and formed the band back in 2009. Bethany and her longtime friend, Bobb Bruno play a blend of lo-fi, garage, surf rock with a dash of influence from 60's pop.
Playing a mix of punk, blues and alternative rock, Cage The Elephant is one of the most highly acclaimed rock band of this generation. Their latest album, Thank You Happy Birthday is one of the best rock albums of 2011.

Mariachi El Bronx

Known respectively as The Bronx, they began their career as one of the elite hardcore punk bands. Later, they have decided to explore their Mexican roots and began playing mariachi music under their alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx.

There is something magical about Marques Toliver. The moment you hear the chimes of his violin, you don't just hear the music. You can feel it. It is the kind of music that swoon the hearts of angels.

With the kind of talent Marques Toliver possesses, he was bound to be discovered. While he was living in New York playing on street corners and subway stations, he was founded by TV On The Radio Kyp Malone. This led to him being recording with indie rock band, Grizzly Bear. But while he took a trip to London, he was discovered (again) by Adele. It's amazing the kind of impression he made between the US and the UK.

His first EP Butterflies Are Not Free is the perfect combination of classical violin and rhythm and blues. Marques Toliver's vocals soar gracefully on top of beautifully written lyrics. After to listening the four-track EP, it makes me wonder what else is in store for the talented musician. In the meantime (while we await for new material), I presented to you video footage of Toliver's amazing performance on the London late show Later...With Jools Holland.

To help ring in the New Year, I have decided to start off 2012 with a list of some of the apps that I like to use to help me discover great music. There are countless music apps all over the iTunes App Store (sorry Android users), but here are some of my personal recommendations.

One of my favorite Wes Anderson films is none other than the Jacques Cousteau inspired film, The
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The film is about the travels of Steve Zissou to capture a shark that has killed his long time friend and partner. While he seeks revenge on his fishy nemesis, he
has discovered that he had a son. He joins him on his quest while trying to establish a relationship with his bond. It is a very strange film with an unusual sense of humor, similar to his previous works. However, I enjoyed every minute of it and I love every detail that was put into the movie.
The Life Aquatic featured a great soundtrack, but it was their compilation album The Life Aquatic
Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge that really stood out. It features talented Brazilian artist
Seu Jorge. It is a collection of David Bowie covers all sung in Portugese. I'm not sure why Jorge
went with Bowie. Maybe he was a fan or perhaps it was under the direction of Wes Anderson.
In any case, the covers sounded amazing. Enriching and absolutely gorgeous, he carried out his
tunes in such a classical way. Bowie, himself would be very proud. On that note, majority of all the tracks (other than Jorge's original "Team Zissou") are featured on two of Bowie's classic albums, The Legend of Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory.
For anyone who enjoys David Bowie should take a look at this compilation. It's a great album and it's worth hearing another perspective on the legendary singer's famous songs. Also, I highly recommend checking out the film.

It was a way for me to chronicle my some of my favorite albums throughout the year and post it as a list for people to see. It is still a tradition that I still continue even until today.

2011 has been a great year for music and there were so many great albums that came out. It was tough having to narrow down my choices to only 20 this year, but as I look at my list, I'm very happy with the albums I have selected.

Before moving on, I would like to first acknowledge of some of my favorites albums that did not make the Cream of the Crop list this year, but are still worth mentioning. These are albums are featured under my "Honorable Mentions" section.

20. Suck It And See by Arctic Monkeys
The title of Arctic Monkey's fourth studio album derives from an English slang that means, “Screw It! I'm going for it!” That has always been the motto of the band throughout their musical career. With Suck It and See, the band combined the psychadelic influences from Humbug with the garage rock energies of their first two albums (Whatever People Think of Me... and Your Favourite Worst Nightmare) to create their most balanced and well toned effort to date.

19. Watch The Throne by Jay-Z & Kanye West
When news of the two biggest names in hip-hop wanting to work together on an album, it caused quite a speculation. Many people were questioning how these two juggernauts would sound if collided with one another. Fortunately, their first (and probably not their last) collaborative effort, Watch The Throne is an incredible feat that showcases both artists' charismatic personalities. Influenced by progressive rock and classical orchestral style of recording, the album moves in more unconventional direction, which bring about a more raw and massive sound. The two may be distinct in their own styles but they have achieved cohesiveness as one.

18. Take Care, Take Care, Take Care by Explosions In The Sky
4 years since their last recorded effort, the Texas post-rock outfit Explosions In The Sky began harnessing their strengths with a renewed sense of focus. On Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, the band took the time to develop their patience in assembling their music. As a result, the melodies on the new album flowed more freely and elegantly as makes transitions from guitar-driven noise to the delicate moments of silence. It is the kind of music that brings about a whole new level of intimacy in which the listener can connect with.

17. Underneath The Pine by Toro Y Moi
Although he is highly regarded as one of the leading artists of the Chillwave movement, Toro Y Moi’s can be described as a chameleon in which his musical landscapes can take on a variety of different disguises. Throughout Underneath The Pine, his music can easily shift from dream pop psychedelia to ambient shoegaze to new wave lo-fi. The fact that he is able to tackle on so many genres is quite remarkable. There is still very little understanding of what chillwave is, but with Toro Y Moi leading the course, it may be possible the newly discovered genre can take on a whole new different form.

16. Soul Punk by Patrick Stump
The moment Fall Out Boy announced their hiatus, it was pretty clear that Patrick Stump would be first in line for a solo spot. Steering away from the punk rock sounds of his previous band, the humble frontman utilized his love of Prince and Michael Jackson as his inspiration for his debut record, Soul Punk. Beautifully chiseled and radio friendly infectious, his sound is reminiscent to the classic heydays of 80's and 90's pop. Stump's broad range of instrumentation as well as his vocal finesse is highlighted on this album, but what makes Soul Punk so incredible is his uncanny ability to adapt in any music genre. Although in this case, it's obvious this is the kind of music he was meant to play.

15. Nine Types of Light by TV On The Radio
TV On The Radio were always known for their broad range of influences. Everything from Bad Brains to Earth, Wind and Fire to even Brian Eno. The band members were never afraid to experiment with their sound. With Nine Types of Light, they blended of all their influences once again and created one of their most cohesive pieces to date. Sadly though, their bassist and fellow comrade, Gerard Smith died of lung cancer a few days after the album was released.

14. Wasted Light by Foo Fighters
An album recorded directly from Dave Grohl's garage, the popular frontman of the Foo Fighters wanted to make a larger than life rock record. The band have succeeded in doing that with their seventh studio album, Wasted Light. Raw, loud and very edgy, this album is worthy of playing in garages and in crowd packed arenas. Every riff and every beat was not wasted and it's dead on "kick your teeth in" rock and roll. The Foo Fighter were already rock stars, but this album only solidifies it.

13. Gloss Drop by Battles
The writing of Gloss Drop took place sometime last year. During that time, guitarist and vocalist Tyondai Braxton left the band to focus on his solo projects. Taking as a chance to reinvent themselves, they re-wrote a brand new album as a trio. What came out of is the same experimental rock sound that fans have grown to love, but with a slight difference. Unlike their previous works, Gloss Drop is less structured and the band incorporated pop sounds into the mix to create a more playful dynamic to their music. It goes to show that although Braxton is no longer with them, they can easily adapt in any situation and can carry on on their own.

12. Civilian by Wye Oak
One of the most intriguing surprises of the year, the indie rock duo was able to use two different genres, both from opposite sides of the musical spectrum and combine them into one amazing sound. On Civiilan, noise and folk (along with indie rock) blends perfectly with one another to create a peaceful, yet driving rock and roll sound. This is an album serves as a reminder that when it comes to music, the possibilities are endless.

11. Angles by The Strokes
Angles mark the band's triumphant return to the music scene. Two years in the making, the band reverted back to the ways of their debut album, Is This It with a few new twists. While playing a more refined version of their garage, post-punk sound this time around, they experimented with electronics and keyboards, which allowed them to create unique layers into their music. As a result, Angles is an extraordinary sonically charged album that is unparalleled to anything in their catalog. After being away for 5 years, it was worth the wait.

10. Strange Mercy by St. Vincent
Strange Mercy, an album that was based on the depression that Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent was experiencing, was recording during a time of reflection and isolation. Musically compelling like her previous albums, but the highlight of this record is her lyrics. Deeply riveting and poetic, her third album is her most personal and endearing work as an artist. This lyrical masterpiece only proves what a gifted songwriter she truly is.

9. The King of Limbs by Radiohead
The band's most spontaneous album (and also their shortest) to date, The King of Limbs was released unexpectedly and in the same fashion as their previous album, In Rainbows. With only eight tracks, Radiohead experimented with their established rock sound while fidding with some new elements such post-dubstep and ambient sounds. What's unique about The King of Limbs is their use of sampling and looping as well as adding the turntable into their instrumentation. It's has oddly mishaped their sound, but perhaps in Radiohead's case, it was probably what they were going for.

8. Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes
An album that was supposedly set to release late last year, turmoil and setbacks caused the album to be pushed back. Finally early this year, Helplessness Blues saw the light of day. With the addition of multi-intstrumentalist Morgan Henderson (formerly of The Blood Brothers), their folk pop sounds fuller and more defined. Along with that, the band's vocal harmonies as a band are absolutely superb on the new album.

7. Build A Rocket Boys! by Elbow
It took 3 years for the English rockers, Elbow to come up with a follow up for their highly acclaimed album, The Seldom Seen Kid. Build A Rocket Boys! is based on frontman's Guy Garvey's nostalgia of his childhood and the beauty of growing up. Heartfelt rock anthems lead by Garvey's uplifting vocals is simply breathtaking and carries a sense of innocence throughout the album. It's is a reminder to always stay young at heart, but to keep moving forward wherever life takes you.
The title England Keep My Bones was derived from a work by William Shakespeare that Frank Turner was reading at the time. While reading the legendary writer’s work, topics such “English identitiy” and “mortality” came to mind. Frank Turner used these thoughts as his inspiration for his latest work. The songs still carry the same punk rock, sing along quality to them like his pervious albums, but this time around the songs carry a much greater depth and emotion to them. It is an album in which Frank Turner has a better understanding of his English roots and the meaning of life.
On his self-titled second album, the Wisconsin folk singer takes a giant leap in the direction of his music. The album was recorded in the lush landscape of the town where Bon Iver grew up in. The singer-songwriter guided the recording process but allowed the music takes it's own natural course. This experiment along with the serene landscape helped shaped his music in a tremendous way. The music sounds more organic and more free and invokes a spiritual quality to the album. It goes to show that nature has a way to guiding us in the right direction.
Although Samuel Beam, aka Iron and Wine is known for his honest folk sound, on his new record Kiss Each Other Clean, the singer-songwriter catches himself playing with the friendly sounds of pop. The album still retains the deep and heartfelt melodies listeners have loved from the artist, but it gives off a vibe that is similar to a classic pop record.
Florence Welch, aka Florence + The Machine, describes her latest work as an album that combines her love of chamber pop, art rock and soul. On Ceremonials, she captivates her audience with her monumental voice and with her powerful ballads. The beautiful songstress of soul may have crafted an album that not only succeeded her previous work, but perhaps she has created one of the most vocally compelling albums of the year.
James Blake caught the attention of many listeners with his haunting cover of Feist's "Limit To Your Love". But that was only the tip of the iceberg. His self titled debut captures a raw sense of romance but in a strikingly bizzare undertone. Other than the fact that the music was recorded in a minimalistic fashion, he utilizes dubstep and ambient elements to create a unique listening experience. But it's Blake's soulful croon is the glue that brings all these elements together and gives life to the album.
1. House of Balloons by The Weeknd
The best record of 2011 happens to be the most mysterious. There is little that people know about Abel Tesfaye, the man behind the moniker The Weeknd. In fact, this album is just a mere mixtape that he created late 2010 and was not released to the general public until March 2011. But little did people realize how incredible this mixtape truly is. Tesfaye sampled different tracks from various artists including Beach House, Siouxsie and the Banshees and even the late Aaliyah and incorporated these pieces into the landscape of his music. He also used elements of hip-hop, dream pop and ambient into the mix to help “soften” the music. In addition, Tesfaye's soulful pipes is a retrospect of the glory days of 90's R&B. When you combine all of these elements together, the results is something unheard of and an absolute thing of beauty. In essence, House of Balloons is what happens to R&B begins to evolve in the modern technological era. A classic vibe thrown into the wonders of a majestic soundscape.Prince Jantzen Reyeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077784726548099390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7715699890443541806.post-65249024289664687192011-11-17T13:39:00.001-10:002011-11-17T13:39:38.538-10:00Cream of the Crop 2011 UpdateHello everyone. It's a couple of weeks since I've last written an entry. You know how life goes. But mainly, I've been busy creating my annual Cream of the Crop list for 2011. Last year, I compiled a list of 50 albums. This year, however I will be narrowing it down to only 20 albums. This will allow me to concentrate on writing quality statements for each album.

The past few weeks I've been looking back on some of the albums that were released throughout the year. It's an amazing feeling re-listening to some of them again while I compile my list. The problem is that with each record I revisit, I have to revise my list all over again. Also, I'm debating if I want to do a 4-part entry (5 albums at a time) or do a 2-part entry (10 albums at a time). Or maybe I will just post one huge entry. Not sure yet...

Anyways, that is all for now. I will post my Cream of the Crop list for 2011 sometime next month.

More entries to follow. Thanks for reading!
I can't emphasize this enough. MUTEMATH is the band that everyone MUST see before they die!

The musicianship of the band tremendous and quite frankly, mind-blowing. For those that were fortunate enough to see the band live, they will understand what I'm talking about. On top of that, there is something the way they create music. Somehow, they are light years away from many of the bands that exists today. More importantly, it's the spirit daring adventurism that they bring on stage is what makes they truly remarkable. If you ask me, MUTEMATH is the band of the future (read my entry entitled The Future of Alternative Rock and my live review of the band)
For the past year, the band is hard at work on their their studio album, Odd Soul. I received the album a few days ago and I must say, it was quite a different listening experience. From what I noticed, the album is more driven by guitars rather than keyboards and synths. Although Greg Hill left the band early in 2010, Roy Mitchell-Cardenas really stepped up to the plate in playing both bass and guitars parts for the new record. The drumming by Darren King is superb like always as he continues to find new innovative ways to play the instrument. Finally, Paul Meany, the legendary keytarist and dynamic frontman outdid himself on Odd Soul and provided quality vocals once again.

The band has already started promoting the new record by releasing two music videos. The first one is for the title track while the other one is for "Blood Pressure". Their videos are amazing and I love their use of stop motion. It really shows their just as innovative visually as well as musically.
There will be no other innovator like him. Still, I never realized how influential he is until I scroll through songs of my 160 GB iPod. It was then that I understood how important he is to the world of music. Even he believed that music is part of everyone's life.

He may not be a musician or a songwriter, but his technological concepts reshaped the way we view music. With a click of a button, a DJ can access his entire music library in the palm of their hand. Music lovers can enjoy 160 GB of their favorite songs wherever they go. Aspiring musicians and songwriters can easily create new music with the help of their MacBook Pros (look up Garage Band). These are only a small handful of ways he has helped innovated music.

We would like to acknowledge his countless efforts in the advancement of technology as well as the wonderful gift that he gave to the evolution of music.

We can't thank you enough, Steve Jobs. You will surely be missed.
Not only was I blown away by the film, but I was impressed by how every detail was not wasted. Everything in Drive was executed perfectly and without flaw (no spoilers here). So for a movie of this caliber, it's a no-brainer that having the right soundtrack is very critical. Fortunately, Nicholas Winding Refn (director) got film score composer and former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, Cliff Martinez signed on to compose the soundtrack. He is well renowned for his work with such films as Sex, Lies and Videotapes, Traffic and Wonderland. His presence and expertise in music helped enhanced the experience that is Drive.

What's amazing about the soundtrack is how "airy" it sounds. That may be sound a little silly but if you think about it. The entire listening experience as a whole feels like a breath of fresh air. Every beat and every sound created is soft to the ears and captivates the listener without overpowering them. For a movie that is harsh and quite brutal, the music serves as a nice balance. Perhaps this is why Martinez was chosen for this endearing project. Through Martinez's ability in composing music, he founded a way to capture a sense of beauty amongst the brutal killing scenes and blood splatter. He helped give the film a new found depth in the endearing heroism of the protagonist (Ryan Gosling) and the compassion he felt toward his neighbor (Carey Mulligan) and her son. In essence, the music helped bring everything together and for movie with tons brawn, the music allowed the film to carry on its' own through grace and elegance. The soundtrack also features tracks from techno-infused and classic inspired tracks from various artists. This helps complete the rich and cohesive soundtrack. One of my personal favorites is the dreamy electro pop track "A Real Hero" by College featuring Electric Youth.

For those that are reading this and have not seen this film, I suggest you drop whatever you are doing right now and go see this film. While you are at it, pick up the soundtrack. It'll be a perfect for the drive there.
With an expansive music palette, he has listened to a variety of records. He's one of the few people that I can always count on in discovering new music. But other than music, another one of my friend's passion is comedy. In fact, I've had the privilege of listening to his long-awaited comedy album, Ladies Choice. The album is available to listen and download via his Bandcamp website. It's a great and absolutely funny record. Some of my favorite bits are "Wine and Cheese Party", "My Luck With Women" and of course my personal favorite, "The Field Goal of Sex". It is a comedy record worth recommending for music lovers and comedy fans alike.

In honor of the release of Ladies Choice, I have taken the time to talk to Joel about music, his favorite albums and how an idea can spark a joke. All of these are his personal words.
I grew up on soul/R&B. There was some hip-hop, but during the early 90’s my folks hid those kind of albums from me. I didn’t get heavy into hip-hop until I was in high school when I had money to buy my own music, then I brought all those albums my folks tried to hide from me. I was a latchkey kid who had cable so I watched MTV religiously in the mid to late 90’s. I was hooked to MTV 2 when it came out; it was nothing but music videos from bands I had never heard before I was in heaven. I remember one day seeing videos from the Clash, English Beat and The Specials, my mind was blown. At the time I thought Ska was this thing created in Orange County California by the band No Doubt, I was in middle school at the time and my music knowledge was little to none, please stop laughing at me. Back then I just soaked up whatever MTV or BET played that I thought sounded good and wasn’t Hanson or The Spice Girls. If I didn’t fit a band on TV, it was the radio, back then and I might be wearing some rose colored glasses, but radio stations had a more diverse playlist, you didn’t hear the same ten or fourteen songs every hour. Maybe because my music knowledge was so limited at the time, but in the mid to late 90’s early thing sounded so new and different, now I listen to a band and I can either hear their influences or worst think of five other bands that do that band’s sound better. God that sounds jaded, but today’s sound doesn’t really sound that innovative to me. I can’t remember when was the last time I found a good band via MTV, BET or the radio, most of the artists I really like I find through blogs, friends, internet radio or worst tv commercials. Every time I find a band through a commercial I always feel like I showed up to the party late and missed the good part.
Does music inspire the way a joke is written no, but it does spark a memory or idea that leads to a joke. What usually happens is I’ll be out with a friend and a song will come on, we will talk about the song or I’ll hear a line that sparks a memory. I share that memory with my friend; if they laugh I start thinking about how I can turn that into a joke. When it comes to my stand up I let that grow naturally, it’s rare that I sit down with pen in my hand and say let’s write some stand up. Every time I try write a joke about a song, I always feel like someone has beat me to the punch, when I do address music in my material I try to focus on the culture around it instead of the art itself. I have a joke where I talk about how I wanted to be a rapper when I was young, but since I grew up in what you would call the suburbs I would need a gimmick and that gimmick would be rapping as Mr. Peanut, the Planters nuts mascot. The whole bit is about how I want to wear a hat, monocle and walk around with a cane, say boastful things about myself with a really annoying hype man behind me.
Influential albums

Roll With The New by Chris Rock: Chris Rock is my all-time favorite comedian, hands down. I don’t remember how I got this album, if it was my mom or I who brought it, all I remember was getting it my freshman year of high school. I played the crap out of this album, I would play the whole album two or three times in a row, each time listening for a different thing like subject matter or how Rock carried himself each time I would found something new. I think almost for a year back then every one of my mixtapes featured a track from this album.

Paul’s Boutique by The Beastie Boys: This album was my gateway to music nerddom. They sampled so many people and so many classic records on this album that if you tried to recreate something like this today you would go broke before you got to a fifth of the samples. I spent a few years trying to at least hear most of them. I got turned onto some really good music that way. This album also made me step up my pop culture references, I figured it they name dropped them in a song they must be important. When I used to freestyle rap, which was a very short summer in high school where I learned that I can’t rap, I found myself biting a lot of rhymes from this album. No one knew I was jacking lines from this album because they didn’t get the references. I don’t condone a biting rhymes or jokes reader, that’s why I stopped before it got out hand.

They Might Be Giants (S/T): their self-titled debut album, if you want to understand me and my style of comedy just listen to this album. This album is full of so many beautiful and funny songs about dark things. I took that idea of saying or exploring dark themes in upbeat comical tone and ran with it. The funny thing about this album, I didn’t really like it the first two times I heard it, I had ordered the wrong album by mistake and I gave it one final listen before I was going to sell it to a used cd shop. I played the song “Number Three”, a song about a musician who only has two songs in him who has just written a third and the confusion that it has given him, it hits during the middle of the song they were talking themselves as artists, being creative and selling out. The song could have been bitchy, but instead you get this get look at humorous look at selling out when you have run out of ideas. Thing about this song that really trips me out is that its third track on the album, implying that they had run out ideas by song three themselves. This album is full of clever jokes like this.

Resurrection by Common: This album had a great impact on me growing up. If Beastie Boys made me step up my pop culture references then this album made me step up my figurative language game up. After hearing this album I knew if I wanted to stand out I would need to creative, I couldn’t just make fart noises or use a funny accent, I would have to put some serious thought into my material. This album has everything I want my material to have clever wordplay, humor, personality, and a feeling that it can stand on its own that you don’t need the author to get the full effect. When I was developing the track “My Luck with Women/ My First Apartment” on Ladies Choice I was definitely thinking about this album.

Keep Your Eyes Ahead by The Helio Sequence: I don’t know much about this band, I found them through Pandora, but the shuffle on my ipod made me a fan. Their song, “Back to This” came on Pandora and I was hooked, I love the drums on it. I hear those drums and I just rocking along to the music, almost if I’m chanting the words. “Back to This” was a serious self-esteem booster during a very long period of unemployment, but I kind of ignored the rest of the album. It wasn’t until my ipod randomly shuffled to this song, “Lately” while I was washing dishes a few months back, that I became a fan of the whole album. This album could be called emotional, not an emo kind of way more of a facing ones fears kind of way, but at the time I needed it, I was dealing with a horrible break up and mourning the death of a friend, it was good to hear feel good music that didn’t feel like a motivational poster. I like to put this album on now in moments where I don’t know what to do next life wise, it helps me clear my mind and help me get back to being me.
But if utilized properly, pop can create a whole new dynamic to music. Naturally, New York City's very own, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart understands this very well. They are able to channel pop's versatility into their own sound to create a unique listening experience.

When listening to their latest album, Belong, it appears that the members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have been listening to some noise pop records. The reason being is that noise is apparent in the soundscape of the album. Influences can be heard from Jesus and Mary Chain, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. Heavy use of distortion collide with infectious pop melodies help create their unique sound. But what's remarkable is that despite the noise intoxicating their soundscape, there is something carefree about it all. That is because the band is able utilize pop to develop an easygoing, upbeat vibe to their music. This overpowers the noisy soundscape to create a radiant and joyful listening experience. As a result, Belong is one of the most intriguing albums created this year and it may be one of the best noise pop albums ever created.

In conclusion, pop music can create a whole new dynamic to music if utilized properly. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have mastered this and they serve as a reminder of pop versatility in any genre. No matter how noisy it can be.
For those that are unfamiliar with the show, the story revolves around Vincent Chase and his group of friends as they make a name for themselves in Hollywood. Vincent is an up-and-coming movie star known for his good looks and charming personality. His best friend, Eric "E" Murphy is his manager and manages his career. Vincent's older brother, Johnny "Drama" Chase was a former actor trying to make his way back into the limelight after some failed stints on TV and a couple of misdemeanor charges. Vincent's other friend, Salvatore Assante, better known as "Turtle", works as personal assistant and driver. To round up the gang is none other than Vincent's agent, Ari Gold. He's considered as the super agent of all agents and helps Vince land roles in big name films. As the show progresses, their lives and the situations they encounter get more complicated. But in the end, they always stick together for each other and that their friendships never falters despite the challenges they face.

One of the things that I enjoy about Entourage are their celebrity cameos. There were countless celebrity appearance throughout the series. In honor of their eighth season, which is also their final season, I decided to look at some of my favorite music celebrity cameos from the show.

Mandy Moore
In Season 2, Vince landed the leading role in James Cameron's superhero film, Aquaman. Besides, the Navy Seal training he had to endure for the movie, the biggest challenge that he had to face was working with co-star, Mandy Moore. Based on the show, they had fling while working on her film, A Walk To Remember and it did not end on good terms. Vince tries to convince himself that he's over her, but the moment she walks back into his life, he knew he was only kidding himself.

Kanye West
Toward the end of Season 3, Vince's highly anticipated film, Medellin is premiering at the prestigious Canne Film Festival. The guys arrived at the airport and found out that there were no available flights to go to France. Fortunately for them, Kanye West and his crew were heading overseas and offered them a lift on his private plane. My favorite moment was when he told everyone that he was going to fly the plane himself. The look on the guys faces were priceless. Momentarily, he told he was just joking around and told them to kick back and enjoy the flight. One of the funniest scenes on Entourage.

Eminem
In the final episode of a topsy-turvy Season 7, Vince was high on cocaine and decides to crash a party at the hotel he was staying at. At the party, he was stirring up trouble and was even making some crude remarks to actress Minka Kelly. When Eminem tried to calm Vince down, he became more hostile and started picking a fight with the Detroit rapper. Before long, a fight broke out. Johnny Drama tried to get his little brother out, but he was unable to do so. Vince went to the hospital with some busies and minor cuts, but if anyone had seen the show would know he had bigger things to worry about than that.
U2
Johnny Drama is huge fan of U2. During Season 2, Ari Gold gave him tickets to watch the band live in concert on his birthday. Amazing concert footage was featured on the show with the guys in the audience. I don't know how the producers on the show were able to pull this off, but it's a very nice touch. Plus, it looks like an awesome music video.
Vincent Chase & Johnny Drama
Okay, I admit this does not involve any music celebrities, but this is one of my favorite moments on Entourage. It features Vince and Drama singing Frankie Valli and The Four Season's classic song, "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" at a young girl's sweet sixteen party. Vince has a pretty decent singing voice, but Drama stole the night in this memorable scene.
The eighth and final season of Entourage has just premiered this past Sunday on July 24th. It's been a great run and I can't wait to see the show end on a high note. For those that have never seen the show, I suggest you Netflix Season 1-7 and start catching up.Prince Jantzen Reyeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077784726548099390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7715699890443541806.post-61323679970217704012011-07-25T16:54:00.001-10:002011-10-22T18:48:53.747-10:00Rest In Peace

Words cannot describe the pain and loss that many people (including myself) felt over the loss of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. She was an influential force that sparked the reemergence of soul music and paved way for many female artists like herself to thrive in the music scene. Despite her off stage antics and behavior, she should remembered for the influence that she has brought onto music. It is difficult to admit that she is not longer with us, but her memory will live through the music she has created. Our hearts and condolences go out to her family, friends and all of our beloved fans. She will be missed.

This marked the first time I came across any records from the Canadian hardcore band. Intrigued, I picked up the record and gave it a listen.

The beauty of a conceptual record is that it can be interpreted in many a hundred different ways. In the case of David however, it's feels more like a thousand. As I mentioned earlier, David Comes To Life is story of love and betrayal, but it was not clear what it's really about. In fact, and I'm not afraid to admit this, I was able to get the idea behind the story from the Youtube video below. The members of Fucked Up mention that it was a man and a beautiful woman that he falls in love with. Tragically, disaster struck and the woman dies. At this point on, it gets even more confusing. I'm not sure if he dies and comes back to life again. Although, that would make more sense due to the title of the album. But then again, if all conceptual albums were that easy to interpret than it would not be something worth listening. To add to that, the best kind of albums are that ones that expect the listener to look beyond the music and see the story behind it. Overall, David Comes To Life is an extraordinary story...if though until this day, I still don't know how it ends.

As far as music goes, absolutely gorgeous. Fucked Up has outshined many hardcore bands with their dynamic musicianship and brilliant songwriting. What makes David Comes To Life standout from the rest of their catalog is their daring attempt in experimenting with pop music. I'm not saying the band went Britney Spears or Justin Bieber on us (Thank God...). I'm saying that they made some tweaks and adjustments to their sound to create a more pop-like vibe. As a result they have created one of the most unconventional sounding albums this year. What's even amazing is that music sounds very cohesive and that the two genres don't collide with one another.

I give mad props to Damian Abraham (aka Pink Eyes) for having one of the most gnarly hardcore voices the game. Strong and aggressive, but highly melodic. Plus, the fact that he's not afraid to perform half naked in front of thousands of people only proves what an amazing frontman he truly his. If any one goes to a Fucked Up show, be in for a wild ride.
Prince Jantzen Reyeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077784726548099390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7715699890443541806.post-87411848769550065832011-06-23T19:49:00.004-10:002011-07-16T16:54:32.769-10:00Visual Representation

I've been a fan of Explosions In The Sky for a long time, but it never occurred to me that they had never made a music video.

But now, after 12 years of being a band and with 6 albums under their belt, the Texas instrumental rock band have finally made their first music video. If looked closely, the animation is very similar to the Heavy Metal film back in 1981. I looked up the director behind the video and it turns out it's not just one person. The people who made the gorgeous music video are known as PTARMAK (pronounced "tar-mack"). They are a designery company that are involved in motion graphics and animation as well as many other things. To know more about PTARMAK, visit their website. All I can say is that they did an amazing job.

It's great to see Explosion In The Sky's music showcased in a whole new medium. Now our eyes and ears can be mesmerized by their glorious music.
For as long as I remember, whenever a song comes on the stereo or when a melody was played on the guitar, my father always has his hand in music. He even used to tell me stories about the bands and artists he used to listen to back when he was young. He would describe their influence in that particular time and how it influenced him. Little did he realize that these stories helped shaped my love for music. It was one of the wonderful gifts that my father has given to me.

In honor of Father's Day, I decided to look back on some of my father's favorite artists and why they were so significant to me

James Taylor

One of the fascinating things about my father was his love for folk music. James Taylor was one of his favorites. This may have contribute to my love for folk music today. There were many songs that he enjoyed, but one of the ones I remember fondly was "Fire And Rain". It still remains one of his most beloved songs to date.

Pink Floyd

My father and I both share an appreciation towards psychedelic rock music. Him listening to Pink Floyd back in the day would be equivalent to me listening to The Mars Volta of today. My dad bought a laser disc (imagine really big DVDs) copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall years ago and we used to watch it all the time. It was a memory that I still cherished today.

Jim Croce

From time he was young and living in the Philippines, my father has always been a great guitar player. He used to play cover songs from some of his favorite artists including folk pop singer by the name of Jim Croce. One of my favorite songs that he used to sing to me and sister was a song called "I Have To Say I Love You In A Song". Since then it has become one of my favorite songs from Jim Croce.

The Beatles/John Lennon

If you look at one of my father's arm, engraved in ink is the band's name as well as John Lennon's name. It was obvious that at one point of his life that he was fan of the legendary fan. More particularly, he was a fan of John Lennon. My father had many stories about their music and how it's influence still makes an impact in today's music. Their song "Let It Be" is definitely a prime example of that.

Eric Clapton

I'm not too familiar with my father ever listening to Cream, but he was definitely a fan of Eric Clapton. He was perhaps one of my father's biggest influences in playing the guitar. He used to play songs such as "Tears In Heaven", "Layla" and "Change The World". However, the song that I'm most fond of him playing was Eric Clapton's bluegrass country influenced song, "Motherless Child".
The video only contains clips of him playing a variety of instruments that when played together composed of a song. His new music is much different from his previous gig with Fall Out Boy and this sparked curiosity among many people. Still at that time, it was premature to determine what Mr. Stump has up his sleeve.

Finally, in February of this year, Patrick Stump dropped his long-awaited EP Truant Wave. According to the man himself, his goal was to gradually get people especially his fans to get comfortable with the music. I had the privilege to grace my ears with his new project and to be quite frank with you, I was not surprised with his new direction he was going for.

For those that don't know, Patrick Stump is a fan of Prince. Therefore, this indicates he has a bit of soul into his music palette. Along with soul, Patrick Stump dabbles in other genres such as funk, pop and of course, rock. A a result, Truant Wave is a highly diverse canvas of groovy melodies and catchy lyricism. With only 6 tracks, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what Patrick Stump can bring to the table.

So far no date has been announced for the release of his debut Art Punk. We are anxiously waiting...

Because of that, people have made references with my name to the famous musician for many years. Therefore, I have developed an admiration for the man and his music.

In honor of his birthday, we take a look at our 5 favorite albums from the man that was once known as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince.

There were many NBA players that have dabbled in the hip-hop scene. However, due to Shaq's charismatic personality, he was by far the most memorable. During his venture as a hip-hop artist (it did not interfere with his time on the court), he has recorded five studio albums. All of which has achieved some level of success on the billboard charts and on the radio.

The most memorable album in his catalog was his debut effort, Shaq Diesel. Maybe it was because this was the record that garnered his nickname "Diesel". But perhaps, the reason why this record was so memorable was that it marked the first time an NBA basketball star recorded an album that had gone platinum. It spawned two top-sellings "(I Know I Got) Skillz" and "I'm Outstanding". Funny how the two best selling songs on the album happen to be about Shaq rapping about how amazing he is. To be quite frank with you, it was good that Shaq did not quit his day job.
Still, as I was listening to his album, I couldn't help but remember the amazing moments that Shaq has made throughout his playing career. From the moment he stepped out on the court as an Orlando Magic rookie to his final game as a Boston Celtic a few weeks ago. After 19 seasons, 3 NBA Finals MVP and 4 NBA Championships, Diesel decided to call a career through video posted on Twitter. With a smile on his face, it was clear that he had no regrets.
